If you’ve ever woken up with puffy eyes and a swollen-looking face, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Whether it’s seasonal allergies, a salty dinner the night before, lack of sleep, or simply fluid retention, that heavy, puffy feeling isn’t exactly how most of us want to start the day.
As a licensed massage therapist and esthetician with more than 25 years of experience, I’ve spent much of my career helping clients address facial tension, puffiness, and circulation concerns. A gua sha stone is one of the simplest tools I’ve found for supporting those goals at home.
What Is a Gua Sha Stone?

A gua sha stone is a traditional Chinese wellness tool used for centuries to encourage circulation, support the body’s natural fluid movement, and relieve tension. Even today, gua sha remains a popular part of many facial routines because it can help reduce puffiness, encourage lymphatic drainage, and leave you looking more refreshed.
One of the gua sha stones I use is this jade-style version from Amazon. At the time of writing, it’s available for under $10, making it an affordable way to try the practice for yourself. It’s simple, easy to use, and small enough to keep in a bathroom drawer or travel bag.
How Do You Use a Gua Sha Stone for Facial Puffiness?
While many people use facial oils or serums with their gua sha stone, I prefer to use mine on clean skin before applying any products.
Using a gua sha stone doesn’t require a complicated routine. In fact, keeping things simple works best.
I typically start around the eye area using very gentle outward strokes. From there, I move across the cheeks and along the jawline, always working from the center of the face outward. I then use the tool across the forehead, then finish with the neck.
One mistake I often see people make is focusing only on the face. The neck is an important part of the process because it’s where fluid naturally drains. I always finish with gentle downward strokes along the sides of the neck before putting the tool away.
Another common mistake is using too much pressure. During my years working with clients, I often found that many people believed they needed aggressive pressure to see results. In reality, the opposite is usually true.
Excessive pressure can irritate and even damage delicate facial skin, particularly around the eyes. A light touch is all it takes to get the same benefits without the risk.
The entire process takes about a minute each morning, but I notice a real difference when allergies are acting up or after a long travel day, when swelling tends to be more pronounced.
For me, the biggest benefit isn’t looking more awake. It’s feeling more comfortable. Less facial puffiness often means less pressure around my eyes and sinuses, which can make a noticeable difference on busy days.
And if you have an early meeting, a video call, or somewhere important to be, that extra minute can be a simple way to look and feel a little more refreshed before the day begins.
Results can vary from person to person. Gua sha is intended as a wellness and skincare tool and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
