I’ve Worked in Skincare for 26 Years. These Are the 3 Natural Deodorants I Use Instead of Antiperspirant

About 10 years ago, one of my longtime skincare clients asked what deodorant I used. Without giving it much thought, I told her Secret.

I’d known her for more than a decade, but her response caught me completely off guard.

“Of all people, that’s what you use?”

She had a point. Even then, with years of skincare experience, I was pretty particular about what I put on my body and used around my home. I’d already carefully chosen most of my skincare, laundry detergents, and household cleaners, and I generally avoided synthetic fragrances. Yet somehow, I’d never given my deodorant much thought.

That conversation got me thinking about what I was applying under my arms every single day, so close to my breast tissue and lymph nodes. I had concerns about potential hormonal disruption and decided it was time to explore alternatives.

Let me tell you, it was not a pleasant experience.

The first few natural deodorants I tried contained baking soda, and the reaction was awful. I developed painful, golf ball-sized welts under both arms. They were unsightly, incredibly uncomfortable, and made me question whether switching was worth it.

I almost gave up.

But then I discovered the original Crystal Mineral Deodorant Stick, and everything changed.

I’ve always been a heavy sweater, so I was worried about giving up my antiperspirant. But I quickly realized even the strongest conventional antiperspirants did little to stop my sweating. I still perspired, but with the Crystal stick, there was no noticeable odor, no staining, and none of that unpleasant residue I remembered from traditional deodorants.

That was nearly a decade ago, and I’ve never looked back.

Since then, I’ve tried several other deodorants made without baking soda or conventional aluminum antiperspirant ingredients, and three options have earned a permanent place in our household.

1. Crystal Mineral Deodorant Stick: My Everyday Favorite

If I could choose only one deodorant, it would be this.

The original unscented Crystal Mineral Deodorant Stick is still my go-to after nearly 10 years. It’s incredibly simple to use. After showering, I wet the top of the mineral stick, apply it directly to my clean underarms, and let it dry before getting dressed.

That’s it.

The mineral stick doesn’t stop you from sweating, but it helps prevent the odor that comes with it, and for me, it works remarkably well.

I live in South Florida, where heat and humidity are part of everyday life. Between the weather, physical activity, and long days working with skincare clients, I’ve put this little crystal through some pretty demanding tests. It has consistently handled my everyday routine without leaving white marks, sticky residue, or an unpleasant smell on my clothing.

It’s also unscented, which I appreciate because I generally prefer fragrance-free skincare and personal care products.

One thing worth knowing is that this isn’t a traditional roll-on or solid deodorant. You need to moisten the mineral surface before applying it, and I find it works best on freshly cleaned skin.

The original Crystal stick contains potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt that contains aluminum. However, it’s different from the synthetic aluminum compounds used in conventional antiperspirants and isn’t designed to block sweat ducts.

For everyday use, I honestly haven’t found anything I like better.

2. Crystal Magnesium Deodorant: My Favorite for Long Days and Travel

As much as I love the original Crystal rock, sometimes I want a little extra odor protection, especially when I know I’ll be away from home for 12 hours or more.

A few years ago, I purchased the Charcoal + Tea Tree version of Crystal’s magnesium deodorant for my husband. It worked so well for him that I decided to try the Coconut + Vanilla version myself, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The stick glides on smoothly without feeling sticky or greasy, and the coconut-vanilla scent is light enough not to overwhelm me. It’s made with essential oils, and I find the fragrance much more pleasant than many heavily scented deodorants I’ve tried.

It also hasn’t left marks on my clothing or that lingering deodorant smell that sometimes seems impossible to wash out.

I put it to the test again this past week flying from Florida to Connecticut.

I applied my regular Crystal mineral stick at 5 a.m., let it dry, and added a light layer of Coconut + Vanilla. I then took a three-hour flight and went straight to working with skincare clients after landing. I didn’t finish until 8:30 that evening.

After more than 15 hours, including travel and a full day of work, I had no noticeable underarm odor, no staining on my clothes, and hadn’t needed to reapply either product.

For me, that combination works better than even the strongest conventional antiperspirants I used years ago, without the irritation I experienced with my early attempts at switching.

My husband still uses the Charcoal + Tea Tree version, and he’s had good results with it, too.

Both magnesium formulas are aluminum-free and baking soda-free, making them worth considering for anyone looking for alternatives to traditional deodorant. Instead of aluminum or baking soda, Crystal uses magnesium as its odor-fighting ingredient, which the brand positions as a gentler alternative for anyone transitioning away from conventional antiperspirants.

3. Lume Whole Body Deodorant: Another Solid Baking-Soda and Aluminum-Free Option

I discovered Lume several years ago while looking for something that could handle longer days, and I have to say, it works pretty well.

I’ve tried both scented and unscented versions, and while I appreciate the odor protection, some of the fragrances are simply too strong for my taste. I generally avoid fragrance in everything from skincare to laundry detergent, so this is a personal preference rather than a criticism of the product’s performance.

The unscented version has been a good compromise.

Lume is designed for use on several external areas of the body, including underarms, feet, and skin folds. It’s aluminum-free and baking soda-free, and the brand advertises up to 72 hours of odor control. One thing to watch for: Lume also sells a “+ Sweat Control” line that contains aluminum, so if you’re avoiding it, stick with the standard formula.

Lume works differently from most deodorants. Its key ingredient is mandelic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) I’m familiar with from professional skincare. It lowers the skin’s pH, and since odor-causing bacteria thrive in a higher-pH environment, that makes it harder for them to take hold. An OB/GYN developed the formula, which is part of why it’s marketed for whole-body use.

In my experience, I can work a 10-hour day, take a three-hour flight, and still feel relatively fresh, which is impressive.

However, I’ve also noticed that when I use Lume regularly, it doesn’t seem to work quite as well for me over time. I can’t say exactly why, but I’ve noticed this with repeated use.

I’d still give it a solid 7 out of 10, particularly for the unscented formula. It’s a good alternative, but for my personal routine, the Crystal products have been more consistent.

What I’ve Learned About Switching From Synthetic Antiperspirant to Natural Deodorant

One of the biggest surprises was realizing I didn’t actually need to stop sweating to feel clean and comfortable.

Antiperspirants and deodorants serve different purposes. Synthetic aluminum-based antiperspirants temporarily reduce how much sweat reaches your skin, while deodorants focus on controlling odor. For someone like me, who has always perspired heavily, that distinction made all the difference.

I’ve also learned that a natural or aluminum-free label doesn’t automatically mean a product will be gentle on your skin. My experience with baking soda was a painful reminder that even ingredients commonly used in natural products can cause irritation.

And fragrance matters, too. After more than 25 years in skincare, I’ve seen how easily perfumes can irritate sensitive skin, and even essential oils can cause reactions. Whenever I try a new deodorant, I patch test it on a small area first, and I avoid applying anything right after shaving, when skin is most vulnerable to irritation.

Given the potential risks of using conventional aluminum antiperspirants and synthetic fragrances under my arms every day, I’d rather limit them, especially since I’ve found alternatives that work so well.

Today, when friends and clients ask what deodorant I use, I can confidently recommend three options based on my own experience.

The original Crystal mineral stick remains my everyday favorite. I reach for the Coconut + Vanilla magnesium stick when I want extra protection, and Lume is another option that has served me well.

It took some uncomfortable trial and error to get here, but after nearly a decade, I’ve found a routine that works for my skin, my Florida lifestyle, and even those long travel days.
